• ARTS STUDIOS
     
    Arts and Humanities students that would like to further their talents, performance abilities, experience, and passion for a continued intensive study of a particular art form may choose an arts studio as an elective. There are currently six arts studios: Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Drama, Visual Art, Dance, and Communication Arts.  Admittance is by AUDITION ONLY.  Space is limited in each studio.  Interested students will indicate their desire to elect an arts studio by designating this on their application. Note:  All prospective Arts and Humanities students must go through an audition process.  
     

    Communication Arts Studio
    The audition process for acceptance into the Communication Arts studio is a two part process.

    The first part will involve applicants presenting ONE of the following:

    • Applicants may submit a 1-2 minute video work that portrays their communication skills
    • Applicants may submit a portfolio of non-verbal communication elements with a short video explaining the portfolio while presenting a 1-2
    • Applicants may present a 1-2 minute demonstration of their communication skills (ex: prepared speech, advertisement, historical address, etc.)
    • Create a storyboard 

     

    Story Board Information
    A storyboard is a story told in pictures, like a comic book. A storyboard helps to bring focus and organization to an idea/concept. Follow the directions below to create a storyboard for a
    commercial. Keep in mind your commercial should be 1-2 seconds in length.

    Story Board Details
    Choose a product you would like to advertise in a commercial. Write a script that has a clear
    beginning, middle, and end. When developing your script, make sure that you consider your
    target audience and consider the message you are trying to convey to them. In addition, do not
    forget to include the setting (time and location of the commercial) and any dialogue that may
    take place.
    Story Board Reminders
    As you create your storyboard, please keep the following in mind:

    • Main idea is clear
    • Dialogue and/or written explanations are placed where appropriate (slogans, captions, etc.)
    • Use the boxes on the Storyboard page (click on storyboard on website) to draw what you the scenes to look like for your commercial. To the right of each box, write a description of what appears in the box.
    •  Product information and purchase details are clear 
    • Clear Sequence of events

    Dance Studio

    The audition process for acceptance into the dance studio will consist of the following:

    • An individual dance solo (Fast / Up Tempo)
    • An individual dance solo (Slow / Down Tempo)

     

    Additional Information  
         

    • Each solo should be at least 1 minute but not longer than 2 minutes
    • Style of choice and should best reflect the applicant’s talents and abilities.
    • It may be a previously choreographed dance piece or one created specifically for this audition. 
    • It may be choreographed either by the applicant, a dance instructor, or a friend.
    • NO COSTUMES PLEASE. 
    • Music must be school appropriate

     

     

     

     

    Drama Studio

    The audition process for acceptance into the drama studio consists of performing a two-minute monologue and acting of a scene.

    Additional Information:

    • Perform a two-minute monologue of choice that highlights a specific talent range (dramatic, comedic)
    • Perform a one-minute to two-minute acting scene showcasing your ability   

     

    Instrumental Studio Requirements

    The audition process for acceptance into the instrumental music studio consists of playing scales and excerpts from two contrasting pieces,  You will be screened for an accurate interpretation of the music stylistically, intonation, expressiveness, articulation, dynamics, rhythmic and pitch accuracy, overall musicianship, and potential. Dress appropriately for your audition.

    Wind/String/Guitar/Piano Auditions

    • Perform Major Scales, 2 octaves if possible, in the keys of Eb, Ab (One File)
    •  Perform a Chromatic Scale in 2 octaves if possible. (2 hands on piano)
    •  Perform 2 excerpts from 2 contrasting style pieces (must be Classical or Jazz style only). 


    Percussion ONLY

    • One excerpt for snare drum.
    • Perform basic rudiments on the snare drum. 
    • Buzz Roll, 5 Stroke Roll, Double Paradiddle, Flam Paradiddle, Lesson 25
    • One excerpt for a mallet instrument (marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, or bells).
    •  (Optional) One excerpt for timpani, 2 to 4 pitches
    • (Optional) Perform basic patterns on the drumset (rock, swing, jazz waltz, bossa nova, etc.).

     

     

    Humanities Studio 

    • Students will prepare a short 2 minute to 5 minute self-directed video interview which answers the following questions.

      Video Questions
    • Tell us about yourself. What do you like to do outside of school?
    • What are your hobbies? would other students/teacher say about your performance in school?
    • How do you see this program helping with your future goals?

    Vocal Studio Requirements

    The audition process for acceptance into the vocal music studio consists of singing an a cappella scale on a neutral syllable, and singing two songs in contrasting style. Students will be screened for accurate interpretation of the music, intonation, expressiveness, diction, dynamics, rhythm and pitch accuracy, overall musicianship, and potential.

    Prepared literature:

    • Perform two songs in contrasting style. Songs must come from standard classical repertoire, standard musical theatre repertoire, or folk song repertoire. Students will perform the solos without accompaniment.
    •  “Popular” song arrangement or original compositions WILL NOT be accepted.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     Visual Arts Studio

    Student applicants will be required to complete a Portfolio containing all necessary contents to be
    considered for admittance into a visual arts studio. Portfolios will be presented to the art faculty
    reviewers at the beginning of the audition. 

    Pre-audition:

    • Students are encouraged to consult with their current art teacher about preparing portfolio pieces.
    • Prepare Portfolio

     

    Portfolio Requirements

    • Minimum of 6 examples of your best artwork  (Artwork does not have to be mounted or framed)
    • Any media (i.e. pencil, paint, marker, pastel, etc.) or subject matter (Portrait, still life, landscape) however, no anime or cartoons.
    • Students are encouraged to have as diverse a selection as possible in regards to subject matter and media. Pieces from both direct observation and imagination are preferred.
    • Submit photos which include the entire work
