Juniors - This is a very important year for all of you! Use this timeline to stay on track and prepare for senior year and life after graduation.FallSeptember - November
- TAKE THE PSAT/NMSQT! The test will be in October! For more information about registration, listen to announcements and see Mrs. Hopkins!
- STAY INVOLVED! Now is the time to build that resume... If you aren't involved in any clubs/organizations, now is the time to sign up. If you are already a member of some clubs, now is the time to look for leadership opportunities. Run for elected positions of your clubs if they are available this year, or make a plan to do so as a Senior.
- START YOUR RESEARCH! If you haven't done this already, it's time to start thinking about life after high school. If you are going to college, you should narrow down a list of possible schools to between 10 and 20. If you have narrowed it down more than that, great! If you are interested in a military career, start researching your options (enlisting, ROTC, military academy, etc.). If you get stuck with anything, come down to visit me and we can do some research together.
- GET TO KNOW YOUR COUNSELOR! I will be meeting with all of you individually to create a plan for the next 2 years. I want to know more about your interests/goals so that I can help you plan for the future. Stop in to see me sometime... You will be seeing a lot of me over the next two years, so get to know me now! =)
Winter
December - February- STUDY! Junior year grades are very important to colleges. Make sure you are staying focused and doing your best. If you are struggling, get help! Your teachers are there to help you, but you have to ask. If you need help with study or organizational skills, stop in to see me. I can help you work out a plan!
- SAT PREP! If you haven't already, start to prep for the SAT. There are a lot of free resources to help you prepare. Start by making a profile on www.collegeboard.org. There are free practice questions/tests on that site, as well as resources that you can purchase. For weekly practice, come to the guidance office and try out the SAT Question of the Week. New questions will be posted each week. Try them out for a chance to win an end of the semester raffle!
- NARROW DOWN YOUR OPTIONS! Spend some time weighing pros and cons of each college/post-secondary option. Start to think about which colleges you would like to visit. Start to think about what is important to you in a college. Check out college websites and start to consider financial options.
Spring
March - June
- START CONTACTING/VISITING COLLEGES! It's time to start thinking about the future... Now is a great time to begin college visits if you haven't already. You can start locally or take a road trip with your friends. The best way to find out you a school is for you is to see it in person. Call the Admissions office at the school to set up a private tour or register for an Open House. They are free and will be PRICELESS when it comes to getting information about the school.
- ATTEND COLLEGE FAIRS! In April, we will be taking a trip to King's College for a College Fair. You will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from over a hundred schools (in-state and out-of-state). This is your chance to ask questions about the application process as well as admissions requirements. This is a helpful way to learn about schools you may never have heard of before.
- TAKE THE SATs... AGAIN! Whether you've taken them before, or not, this is a great time to get another test under your belt. Register on collegeboard.org and take the test if you'd like to improve your scores. If you are happy with your SAT scores, and the college your interested in requires it, consider signing up for an SAT Subject Test. See me if you have any questions about it!
