• Dear Parent/Guardian,

The purpose of this page is to inform you about your child’s Health and Physical Education class this semester. Please read and discuss the information with your child. First, and foremost I ask my students to talk to me first with any concerns they have, but if that didn’t resolve their problem then please feel free to contact me.

A few important points to go over with you to ensure a successful year for your child:

    1.  Please know that Health and Physical Education is a course that is required to be passed both in 9th and 10th grade in order to graduate from Hazleton Area School District.

    2. Your child’s grade is a combination of many ways of assessing him/her. Three categories are used to determine a numerical grade. Participation (every 11 school days).  Assignments (Various health and PE assignment, projects. Tests (health tests, mile runs, quizzes ...) each type of assignment is weighted differently.

    3. Please understand that our school does not have a gymnasium for team sports to be played. With our limited space, we use it as a fitness facility focusing on strength training, cardiovascular endurance activities, and teamwork. There are times we do go outside of the school, as well. Students should be dressed for exercising. Compression shorts and sports bras are recommended, sneakers are a must. Please be advised we do have individualized showers, and do encourage their use as the students do need to return to other classes throughout the day. Deodorant should be encouraged, if your child is not showered.

    4. The student’s participation grade will not suffer from being on a field trip, sporting event or if they miss school from being sick with a doctor’s note. However, assignments missed on those days must be made up. If they’re missing an assignment, that should be made up within 3 school days. If your child is not able to participate because of doctor’s excuse, we will try to accommodate their specific physical limitations; otherwise alternative assignments will be issued. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any unexcused absences (no doctor’s notes).
